We are delighted to be working once again with the Musical & Amicable Society. The programme comprises music composed by three of the most remarkable musicians of the Renaissance who used the texts of poet Battista Guarini, court wordsmith to Duke Alfonso II in Ferrara during the latter part of the sixteenth century.
Guarini used the ancient mythical stories of Arcadia, home to shepherds and shepherdesses whose activities were influenced and overseen by gods and goddesses. Diana, goddess of war, the moon and love has become displeased with the Arcadian mortals and has demanded the sacrifice of a maiden descended from the Gods. Things don't necessarily follow to this alarming conclusion, however this is a convoluted story, don't expect to follow all the twists and turns, just come and enjoy the glorious music composed to tell the tale!
